Senior Medical Coder – Remote (Minneapolis, MN/WI/MI)

Company: Optum (in partnership with Allina Health)
Location: Minneapolis, MN (Remote for nearby states)
Compensation: $23.41 – $41.83 per hour (based on experience)


Job Summary

Optum, in strategic collaboration with Allina Health, is seeking a Senior Medical Coder to deliver accurate coding and auditing services for clinical records. This fully remote role requires advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and MS-DRG coding standards. You will collaborate with coding teams to ensure compliance, maximize reimbursement, and maintain coding quality.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, Modifiers, and MS-DRG codes based on clinical documentation and national coding guidelines.

  • Assist with code selection, queries, and educational support for Allina Health coders.

  • Serve as a coding resource and answer queries regarding coding standards and documentation.

  • Participate in ongoing coding audits and ensure timely completion of work queues.

  • Review and evaluate medical records for accurate documentation and coding integrity.

  • Support departmental goals by recommending process improvements and maintaining productivity.

  • Collaborate on special projects and assist in onboarding/training new coders.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Certification in one of the following: CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT (AAPC or AHIMA).

  • 2+ years of professional medical coding experience in healthcare settings.

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, MS-DRG, and HCPCS.

  • Strong knowledge of coding compliance, medical terminology, and anatomy.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Health Information Management.

  • Epic EHR experience.

  • Previous experience with ICD-10 CM & PCS coding for RHIT or RHIA credentials.
