Job Overview
Optum is seeking a Senior Data Analyst – Clinical / Medical Coder to support clinical data management and healthcare analytics initiatives. This role focuses on analyzing clinical data from Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and claims systems to ensure accurate data mapping, standardization, and integration.

The position requires strong clinical informatics expertise to translate healthcare data into standardized coding frameworks and analytics-ready formats. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering teams, life sciences clients, and clinical informatics specialists to ensure accurate data transformation and integration within healthcare technology platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Data Analysis and Mapping

  • Analyze clinical datasets from EMR, EHR, and healthcare claims systems to ensure accurate mapping and standardization.

  • Perform source-to-target mapping of coded and uncoded clinical data into industry-standard or proprietary healthcare coding systems.

  • Standardize additional data elements including measurement units, free-text results, and numeric clinical assessments.

Clinical Informatics and Data Integration

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in laboratory and microbiology data for internal teams and client inquiries.

  • Develop technical specifications for managing, mapping, and transferring clinical data elements across healthcare systems.

  • Participate in ETL development processes by preparing detailed mapping and data transformation specifications for engineering teams.

Healthcare Data Standardization and Coding

  • Maintain crosswalks between internal identifiers and industry-standard coding systems.

  • Ensure accurate use of medical coding frameworks such as NDC, RxNorm, LOINC, SNOMED, CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS where applicable.

  • Support the transformation of clinical data into standardized healthcare data models used in analytics and reporting.

Data Quality Investigation and Issue Resolution

  • Investigate clinical data discrepancies and identify root causes related to laboratory, microbiology, and clinical datasets.

  • Collaborate with engineering and informatics teams to resolve data mapping and integration issues.

  • Support product updates, system releases, and data quality improvements.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Work closely with life sciences clients to translate clinical data requirements into technical and analytical specifications.

  • Partner with engineering teams to design effective data mapping and integration solutions.

  • Collaborate with clinical informatics specialists to ensure accurate representation of healthcare knowledge in data systems.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of clinical data structures used in EMR/EHR and healthcare claims systems.

  • Experience working with medical coding standards such as CPT, ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, NDC, RxNorm, or HCPCS.

  • Proficiency in SQL and regular expressions (REGEX) for data extraction and transformation.

  • Familiarity with big data platforms and cloud technologies used in healthcare analytics environments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to data accuracy and quality.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, healthcare, laboratory sciences, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum 2 years of direct patient care clinical experience.

  • At least 2 years of experience working with clinical data from EMR/EHR systems or healthcare claims databases.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience mapping source clinical data to target healthcare systems or analytics platforms.

  • ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or equivalent professional certification preferred.

  • Experience working with backend healthcare data systems and clinical informatics platforms is advantageous.
