Position Overview

Roche is seeking a Scientist – SBX Molecular Engineering (Oligo Synthesis) to join its innovative molecular engineering team in Seattle.

This role focuses on designing, synthesizing, and optimizing molecular building blocks for Roche’s next-generation sequencing technology, Sequencing by Expansion (SBX™)—an advanced nanopore sequencing platform designed to improve sequencing accuracy and throughput.

Following Roche’s acquisition of Stratos Genomics, this team is driving breakthrough innovation in molecular diagnostics and DNA sequencing technologies that can significantly impact patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate will bring strong laboratory research expertise, molecular engineering knowledge, and a passion for solving complex scientific challenges.


About the Technology

SBX™ (Sequencing by Expansion) is an innovative sequencing technology designed to enhance nanopore DNA sequencing performance.

This technology works by translating DNA sequence information into a measurable molecular surrogate known as an Xpandomer, enabling:

  • Improved sequencing accuracy
  • Higher throughput
  • Enhanced molecular analysis performance
  • Faster diagnostic innovation

Key Responsibilities

Research & Experimental Design

  • Design, plan, and execute innovative, well-controlled laboratory experiments with strong scientific rigor.
  • Develop experimental strategies to support molecular engineering and oligonucleotide synthesis objectives.
  • Maintain exceptional attention to experimental detail and reproducibility.

Molecular Engineering & Reagent Production

  • Engineer and synthesize molecular building blocks for SBX technology.
  • Support production of:
    • Reagents
    • Starting materials
    • Experimental molecular components
  • Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory workflows.

Problem Solving & Process Optimization

  • Identify technical challenges and troubleshoot experimental issues creatively and effectively.
  • Propose process improvements to enhance:
    • Laboratory efficiency
    • Experimental consistency
    • Production workflows
    • Research outcomes

Data Analysis & Documentation

  • Perform scientific data analysis and protocol development.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and reliable laboratory documentation.
  • Ensure experimental records meet scientific and compliance standards.

Collaboration & Scientific Communication

  • Contribute to project planning and achievement of research milestones.
  • Present findings in:
    • Team meetings
    • Group discussions
    • Departmental scientific reviews
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams.

Laboratory Operations

  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness.
  • Ensure safe and efficient lab practices are followed consistently.

Required Qualifications

Education

Preferred educational background in:

  • Molecular Biology

Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of laboratory research experience (as indicated in the job description)
  • Hands-on scientific laboratory experience in molecular research environments
