Role Summary:

The Principal Engineer will lead the end-to-end design and development of critical subsystem components within the Surgical R&D organization. This role ensures that designs meet performance targets and regulatory requirements, mentors technical-support engineers, and collaborates with manufacturing teams to scale products from prototype to production.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design & Engineering

    • Design, model, and document plastic, die-cast, sheet-metal, and machined parts and assemblies using Creo Parametric and SolidWorks.

    • Conduct fit, form, and DFM/DFA checks to validate designs against requirements.

    • Recommend fabrication and additive manufacturing methods (injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, machining) for R&D needs.

    • Produce detailed fabrication drawings with GD&T and perform tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability.

  2. Project Leadership & Mentorship

    • Lead project teams, mentor associates, and delegate work to achieve R&D goals.

    • Mentor and train engineers on Creo Parametric/SolidWorks, top-down design, and master-model best practices.

  3. Process & Standards

    • Establish and sustain top-down skeleton architecture by integrating mechanical component designs.

    • Enforce and enhance Alcon’s engineering standards, processes, and procedures.

    • Manage CAD files, associated drawings, and revision control using Windchill.

  4. Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

    • Partner with manufacturing teams to ensure seamless scale-up and quality control.

    • Develop and manage relationships with external suppliers and internal stakeholders.

    • Leverage engineering service experience to drive client-focused project delivery.


Preferred Qualifications / Skills / Experience:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering or related field.

  • Experience:

    • 10 years of relevant experience in R&D, preferably in the medical device industry.

    • Experience with Creo Parametric modules: ISDX, Simulate, Pro-Process, Sheet Metal, Mechanism, top-down design, and master model methodology.

    • Advanced modeling skills in SolidWorks.

    • Strong knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

    • Familiarity with DRM and ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards.

    • Experience designing plastic, die-cast, sheet metal, machined parts, system interconnects, cables, and PCB FF (preferred).

  • Skills:

    • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and work in a fast-paced R&D environment.

    • Strong English communication skills (reading, writing, speaking).

    • Motivated self-starter with leadership and mentoring abilities.
