Microbiologist I – Medical & Clinical Affairs | Abbott, St. Paul, MN

Job Summary:

Abbott is hiring a dedicated Microbiologist I at its St. Paul, MN facility within the Structural Heart Business. This role involves ensuring the microbiological integrity of medical device manufacturing processes, conducting environmental monitoring, and supporting sterilization procedures. Ideal for candidates with a microbiology background and sterilization expertise, this position offers growth in a regulated, fast-paced healthcare environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for environmental monitoring and microbiological methods.

  • Conduct investigations of out-of-specification events.

  • Develop and execute qualifications for controlled access environments, deionized water, and compressed air systems.

  • Assess microbial impact of manufacturing process changes.

  • Write and evaluate environmental disturbance reports.

  • Support sterilization process validation, including data analysis and documentation.

  • Maintain microbiology-related documentation and standards compliance.

  • Oversee validations of new technologies, equipment, and test methods.

  • Contribute to quality assurance through CAPAs, NCMRs, and investigations.

  • Train operations staff on microbiological procedures and standards.

  • Ensure compliance with FDA and international regulatory requirements.


Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Microbiology or related field with 4+ years’ industry experience (medical device/pharma).

  • Proficient in microbiology laboratory methods and sterilization processes.

  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve microbiological OOS situations.

  • Team player with ability to work independently in a matrixed environment.

  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.

  • Willingness to travel 5-10%, including international locations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree with 5+ years’ experience or Master’s degree with 2+ years’ experience in medical device or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Expertise in Ethylene Oxide, Steam, Liquid Chemical sterilization methods.

  • Experience in Bioburden, Bacterial Endotoxin, and Sterility testing.

  • Familiarity with CAPA processes and project management.
