Position Overview

The Manager, Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with Scientific Experts (SEs) and other key stakeholders in the field of medical and scientific research. MSLs are instrumental in the scientific exchange of knowledge, offering in-depth and cutting-edge information about Lilly’s therapeutic areas, products, and clinical research. By engaging with SEs, MSLs collect valuable insights that help inform Lilly’s strategic direction for research, development, and commercialization. This field-based role requires an individual who can manage complex, high-level scientific discussions and communicate essential information effectively to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Scientific Expertise & Knowledge

    • Maintain deep scientific knowledge in the assigned therapeutic area(s), continuously learning and staying updated with the latest developments in the field.
    • Respond to complex scientific inquiries and deliver clear, accurate, and unbiased information to customers, including SEs, health professionals, and research teams.
  2. Customer Engagement & Support

    • Engage in 2-way, mutually beneficial dialogues with SEs to support their medical and scientific needs.
    • Facilitate scientific exchange, connect SEs with internal Lilly resources, and identify potential collaborative research opportunities.
    • Act as a trusted liaison between Lilly and the scientific community, ensuring timely and relevant information is shared with SEs.
  3. Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

    • Synthesize complex scientific data and communicate insights, trends, and unanswered questions from SE interactions to internal teams (medical, commercial, and cross-functional).
    • Contribute to strategic planning and medical initiatives, actively participating in the development of medical plans, research, and data dissemination strategies.
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to provide data-driven recommendations and inform key decisions.
  4. Territory Ownership & Performance

    • Take responsibility for managing a specific territory, ensuring effective prioritization, planning, and execution of strategic initiatives.
    • Regularly evaluate and adjust territory strategies to maximize impact, taking accountability for results and compliance.
  5. Compliance & Adherence

    • Ensure all medical activities comply with internal guidelines, policies, and external regulations.
    • Uphold high ethical standards in all interactions, demonstrating sound judgment and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements: Advanced degree in health sciences (PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent in a medically related field). Candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (e.g., BSN, RPh, PA, NP) will be considered if they have 5 or more years of clinical, research, or industry experience in the relevant therapeutic area.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of relevant clinical, research, or medical science experience in a therapeutic area; or 5+ years if holding a lower degree.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English (both verbal and written) is required.
  • Travel Requirement: Ability to travel up to 80% of the time, including up to 4-6 weekends annually. Must be based in proximity to a transport hub (airport or train station).

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Strong intellectual curiosity and passion for science/medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present complex scientific content effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a high emotional intelligence to engage in professional relationship building and networking.
  • Experience in professional networking and servicing customer needs for complex information.
  • Familiarity with health systems, academic communities, and medical education processes is highly valued.
  • Previous field-based experience and an understanding of industry standards and medical affairs are preferred.
