Job Overview

athenahealth is hiring a Lead Member of Technical Staff (LMTS) to lead the design and development of scalable backend systems that enhance healthcare interoperability. The role involves architecting microservices, leading engineering teams, and delivering cloud-based healthcare solutions that improve operational efficiency and patient care outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

1. Backend Architecture & Development

  • Lead technical design and architecture of backend services using Java and Spring Boot.

  • Develop scalable microservices-based systems for healthcare data exchange.

  • Ensure systems are secure, reliable, and maintainable.

2. Cloud & Infrastructure Management

  • Build and manage cloud-native applications on AWS.

  • Utilize services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, and CloudWatch.

  • Implement containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.

3. Engineering Leadership

  • Mentor and guide software engineers and technical team members.

  • Provide performance feedback and support professional development.

  • Participate in hiring and technical interviews to grow the engineering team.

4. DevOps & Operational Excellence

  • Implement CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring systems.

  • Improve system reliability through incident response and observability practices.

  • Monitor system performance and optimize capacity, scalability, and cost efficiency.

5. Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with product managers, architects, and platform teams to convert business requirements into technical solutions.

  • Coordinate integration efforts across teams to ensure secure API design and interoperability.

6. AI & Emerging Technology Integration

  • Design and integrate AI-enabled features and machine learning solutions into production systems.

  • Work with AI/ML and LLM platforms for model evaluation, prompt design, and safe deployment practices.

  • Strong programming expertise in Java and Spring Boot
