Role Overview

As Director – RDU IT, Generative AI (AI/ML), you will lead the design, deployment, and operationalization of cutting-edge Generative AI solutions for both scientific and business applications. Reporting to the Director, RDU IT – Data Science, you will manage engineering teams, oversee AI infrastructure, and ensure ethical and effective AI integration into enterprise systems.

This leadership role combines technical mastery, operational governance, and strategic vision to scale AI-driven solutions across the organization.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of Generative AI models and applications for business and scientific purposes.

  • Manage and mentor regional engineering teams working on AI initiatives, fostering high-performance delivery.

  • Oversee AI infrastructure architecture, automation, and scalability to support GenAI models and services.

  • Integrate Generative AI capabilities into enterprise platforms, workflows, and applications to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Ensure governance, monitoring, and performance optimization of AI systems in production.

  • Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and stakeholders to align AI development with organizational objectives.

  • Promote responsible and ethical AI use, adhering to regulatory and governance requirements.

  • Develop and maintain shared AI frameworks, templates, and reusable assets to accelerate GenAI solution delivery.


Essential Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related technical field.

  • 10+ years of experience in machine learning, AI, data science, or software engineering, with proven delivery of AI solutions in production.

  • Expertise in Generative AI, including large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and AI-powered applications.

  • Proven leadership in managing technical teams, mentoring engineers, and driving high-quality output.

  • Strong strategic and operational planning skills, capable of translating technical concepts into actionable solutions.

  • Experience working across distributed/global teams, promoting collaboration and inclusivity.

  • Hands-on experience with MLOps, including model deployment, monitoring, automation, and lifecycle management.

  • Proficient in Python and libraries such as Hugging Face Transformers, LangChain, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.

  • Experience with cloud-based AI platforms (AWS SageMaker, Bedrock, Lambda, ECS) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bitbucket).


Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Designing and deploying LLM-based enterprise AI systems for content generation, summarization, document parsing, or chat interfaces.

  • Understanding challenges in GenAI model management, including hallucinations, context limitations, and performance tuning.

  • Experience applying Generative AI in pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare domains.

  • Knowledge of responsible AI practices, model explainability, prompt safety, and ethical risk mitigation.

  • Active contributions to AI communities, open-source projects, or thought leadership (publications, blogs, hackathons).
