Role Overview
The Coder – Surgery Coding is responsible for analyzing patient records and converting clinical documentation into accurate medical codes for surgical procedures. The role ensures coding accuracy to prevent billing denials, validates clinical documentation for same-day surgery services, and maintains compliance with regulatory coding standards and reimbursement guidelines.
This position requires strong expertise in medical coding frameworks, healthcare regulations, and surgical coding practices, along with attention to detail and analytical capabilities.
Experience Required
Minimum 1+ years of experience in medical coding or a related specialty.
Mandatory experience in Facility Surgery Coding or Same Day Surgery coding.
Educational Qualifications and Certifications
Mandatory certification: CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), or COC (Certified Outpatient Coder).
CPC-A certification is not applicable.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze patient information and convert clinical documentation into accurate medical codes.
Ensure coding accuracy to minimize billing denials and reimbursement issues.
Validate documentation supporting same-day surgery coding based on medical decision-making or time-based criteria.
Maintain updated knowledge of coding standards, guidelines, and professional credentials.
Apply ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding principles accurately.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific billing and reimbursement regulations.
Maintain high standards of documentation validation and coding compliance.
Required Skills and Competencies
Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
Understanding of reimbursement systems and healthcare regulatory frameworks.
Knowledge of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and CMS guidelines.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Detail-oriented with strong comprehension and typing skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
Experience with coding software or encoders such as 3M, TruCode, or Optum.
Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) or Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems such as EPIC or Cerner.
Knowledge of multiple coding specialties including Evaluation and Management (E&M), inpatient, or outpatient coding.
