Role Overview

ICON is seeking a Senior Lead Clinical Data Science Programmer / Clinical Data Engineer to join its Strategic Solutions team. In this role, you will lead the development and implementation of advanced data science solutions, ensuring the integrity and quality of clinical trial data. You will oversee data pipeline design, cloud-based ETL/ELT development, and data integration across multiple platforms, supporting efficient and compliant clinical research operations.

This position is ideal for candidates with strong programming, cloud, and database expertise, and prior experience in clinical data engineering or programming in a regulated environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design, development, and deployment of data pipelines for ingestion and delivery of clinical trial data.

  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT solutions integrating heterogeneous data sources and automating manual processes.

  • Implement robust data integrity, validation, and quality checks throughout the data ingestion lifecycle.

  • Design and maintain data warehouses and data lakes (Snowflake, Amazon Redshift) for optimal storage and retrieval.

  • Collaborate with statistical programmers, SDTM programmers, analytics, and clinical data teams to meet deliverable requirements.

  • Provide guidance on cloud-based data architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP) and version control / CI-CD practices (GitLab, GitHub, Jenkins).

  • Escalate critical issues and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in clinical data engineering workflows.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in clinical data engineering, programming, or related fields.

  • Proven expertise in ETL/ELT design, data pipeline development, and cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, RShiny, SQL, and familiarity with NoSQL databases.

  • Hands-on experience with data warehouse and data lake management (Snowflake, Amazon Redshift).

  • Familiarity with version control systems (GitLab, GitHub) and CI/CD frameworks (Jenkins).

  • Solid understanding of database concepts, API integrations, and structured/unstructured data formats (XML, JSON).

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional, regulated environment with attention to data quality and compliance.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience in clinical trials, clinical data programming, or regulated life sciences projects.

  • Knowledge of cloud orchestration, workflow automation, and data visualization tools.

  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance standards and clinical trial data reporting requirements.
