Internship Overview

The Process Development (PD) internship is a full-time, lab-based summer opportunity within Amgen's Operations function in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Operations is responsible for manufacturing and delivering Amgen’s therapeutics globally, ensuring that patients receive safe, effective medications—every patient, every time.

Interns will be placed in one of the following PD teams:

  • Drug Substance Technologies

  • Drug Product Technologies

  • Attribute Sciences

  • Combination Product Operations

  • Digital Strategy & Capabilities

  • Manufacturing and Clinical Supply


Key Responsibilities

With guidance from a hiring manager, interns will:

  • Conduct a hands-on, lab-based research project relevant to their assigned team.

  • Execute, document, and analyze experiments and interpret data into meaningful conclusions.

  • Present findings to internal stakeholders through compelling, well-organized communication.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including:

    • Executive speaker sessions

    • Lab and facility tours

    • Mentorship

    • Networking and social events


Sample Past Intern Projects

  • Drug Substance Technology:
    Development of single-pass tangential flow UF/DF unit operation for ultra-high concentration drug substance production.

  • Attribute Sciences:
    Advancing activity assays for key residual host cell proteins.

  • Drug Product Technology:
    Using mass spectrometry as an in-line process analytical tool for lyophilization.

  • Combination Product Operations:
    Gathering patient and stakeholder insights to improve combination products.

  • Manufacturing & Clinical Supply:
    Standardizing tactical project management for commercial drug product tech transfers.


Basic Qualifications

To be eligible for the internship, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Be currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college/university

  • Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study prior to the internship

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent

  • Plan to return to a full-time degree program after the internship

  • Be located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship

  • Not be employed at the time the internship begins


Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

  • 1–3 years of lab experience

  • Strong basic lab and data analysis skills

  • Attention to detail and ability to follow experimental protocols

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, structured problem solving, and clear communication

  • Interest in biotech, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and process development
