Job Purpose

The Medical Technologist is responsible for the collection, handling, processing, and testing of project samples in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with established procedures and maintaining high-quality standards in testing.


Key Responsibilities

Specimen Collection and Testing:

  • Adhere to laboratory policies and procedures for specimen collection, handling, processing, and test analysis.
  • Perform pre-analytical checks on samples to ensure quality standards are met before testing.
  • Test project samples as per established laboratory protocols.

Laboratory Maintenance and Inventory Management:

  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance activities on laboratory equipment according to operating procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain inventory of reagents, calibrators, spares, and other materials necessary for daily operations.
  • Order new testing supplies based on inventory requirements.

Quality Control and Compliance:

  • Follow the laboratory’s quality control policies and ensure all testing is conducted in compliance with SOPs.
  • Document quality control, calibration, and maintenance activities.
  • Identify, document, and initiate corrective and preventive actions for non-conformances and deviations.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Data Management:

  • Record test results manually or electronically and ensure accurate filing of data generated in the laboratory.
  • Archive records as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure proper filing of all data.
  • Ensure that test results are checked for accuracy before initialization.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and perform decontamination as per SOPs.
  • Comply with environmental health and safety (EHS) policies.
  • Raise deviations and change controls in Trackwise as required.

SOP Preparation and Review:

  • Prepare and/or review standard operating procedures in the electronic document management system (EDMS).

Educational Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field.

Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Strong background in hematology, biochemistry, immunoassay, clinical pathology, serology, and flow cytometry.
  • Hands-on experience with hematology, biochemistry, immunoassay, serology, and flow cytometry equipment.
  • Knowledge of ELISA and flow cytometry assays is highly desirable.
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in using laboratory information systems (LIS), Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements such as ISO 15189:2022, CAP, NABL.
  • Proficiency in software like Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), GraphPad, and Adobe.

Experience:

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in a Medical Technologist role.

Behavioral Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
