Role Summary

The Subject Matter Expert will be responsible for accurate coding of professional services from medical records in a hospital or clinic setting. This includes the assignment of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes, ensuring adherence to official coding guidelines. The role involves reviewing medical charts, maintaining up-to-date coding knowledge, and working within a team to ensure coding quality and productivity.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient services in a hospital setting.

  • Ensure adherence to coding guidelines, including DRG with reference to CC/MCC.

  • Abstract additional data elements during the chart review process.

  • Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians as needed.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines and participate in coding educational events.

  • Organize and prioritize work to meet regulatory and client coding guidelines.

  • Adhere to confidentiality and HIPAA policies for patient records.

  • Participate in team activities and contribute to improving team quality and productivity.


Required Qualifications

  • Life Science or Allied Medicine degree.

  • Certification from AAPC or AHIMA (CIC preferred).

  • 4+ years of acute care inpatient medical coding experience, including experience in trauma centers and teaching hospitals.

  • Expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding.
