Job Opportunity: Senior Scientific Manager – Medical Communications | ICON plc (Remote, US)

We are looking for a Senior Scientific Manager (SSM) to support our medical communications and medical publications teams. This is a remote opportunity (preferably in the Northeast US) with ICON, a global leader in clinical research, offering exciting challenges and growth in the medical communications field.

Role Overview:

As a Senior Scientific Manager (SSM), you will leverage your extensive experience in developing and executing medical publications and communication strategies. You will be integral in ensuring high-quality scientific content and medical insights are delivered across diverse therapeutic areas and product development stages.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Oversight & Quality Control (50%):

    • Lead the development of high-level scientific and regulatory documents such as clinical trial reports (CTRs), investigator brochures (IBs), and clinical evaluation reports (CERs).
    • Ensure scientific content meets client objectives and industry standards through thorough review, editing, and feedback.
    • Provide innovative, proactive insights into assigned product/therapy areas.
    • Oversee the quality of content produced by the writing team, ensuring scientific accuracy and clarity.
  • Team Management & Mentorship (25%):

    • Manage and mentor assigned scientific writers and staff, ensuring alignment with project goals.
    • Contribute to project planning, including timelines, resource allocation, and budget management.
    • Establish and enforce high-quality content standards and review procedures.
    • Foster a collaborative environment by providing guidance and coaching to junior team members.
  • Scientific & Client Support (25%):

    • Act as the strategic bridge between clients’ overall product development plans and practical implications for medical communication deliverables.
    • Develop and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with content authors, clients, and clinical experts.
    • Proactively identify new business opportunities and support client growth in collaboration with account managers.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Education: Advanced degree (preferably PhD) in a scientific discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years in medical publications/communications with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Scientific Director or similar).
    • Experience working in medical communications or agency settings.
    • Proven history of managing high-level content and client relationships.
  • Certifications: CMPP™/MAPPS Certification preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills.
    • Excellent client relationship management and strategic insight.
    • Proficiency in using industry-standard resources (e.g., PubMed, clinicaltrials.gov, etc.).
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with editorial, graphics, and digital teams.
