Senior Dialysis Technician

Purpose and Scope:

As a Senior Dialysis Technician, you will play an integral role in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients, working under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals. You will be responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, assisting in patient education, ensuring machine safety, and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. Additionally, you will support the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Education:

  • Patient Interaction: Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing since the last treatment.
  • Vascular Access: Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as needed.
  • Vital Signs & Weighing: Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Dialysis Treatment: Initiate and evaluate dialysis treatments, adjusting blood flow and dialysate flow as needed.
  • Monitoring: Observe patient responses, document any changes, and provide necessary interventions.
  • Discontinuation of Treatment: Ensure proper discontinuation of treatment and document all relevant patient data.

Machine Setup and Safety Checks:

  • Ensure that dialysis machines are properly set up and safety alarms are enabled.
  • Perform machine checks and ensure that all parameters are correct for each patient.
  • Monitor machine functions throughout the treatment process and intervene as required.

Staff Support and Education:

  • Assist in the recruitment and orientation of new clinical staff.
  • Provide ongoing training and competency evaluations for direct patient care personnel.
  • Partner with nurses and interdisciplinary team members to educate staff on safety protocols, water system integrity, and infection control.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Accurately document patient treatment, including vital signs, treatment parameters, and any interventions.
  • Ensure all patient records are complete and compliant with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and infection control audits.

Home Therapies Support:

  • Assist in patient education and provide support for home dialysis programs, including peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis (HHD).
  • Perform administrative tasks like patient chart preparation, lab specimen collection, and support for home therapies visits.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • This position requires prolonged periods of standing and lifting (up to 40 lbs).
  • Frequent interaction with patients, coworkers, and healthcare equipment.
  • Work environment is similar to a healthcare facility, with exposure to infectious materials.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: High School diploma or GED (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of patient care experience in a hospital or related facility.
  • Certifications: National PCT certification or state-specific certification as required.
  • Skills: Strong communication, training, and leadership abilities.
