This job description is for a Senior Associate Scientist position at Pfizer, focused on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) Development and formulation. The role involves contributing to the design and development of solid forms of APIs and drug products, ensuring their performance from discovery to commercial launch. Below is a detailed summary of the responsibilities and qualifications for the position:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical and Scientific Support:

    • Conduct scientific studies related to the design and characterization of API solid forms and particle characterization.
    • Crystallize drug candidates and evaluate these forms to ensure they meet the standards for chemical manufacturing and formulation.
    • Perform solid-state and particle characterization activities for small molecules, including using techniques like polarized light microscopy, electron microscopy, and laser diffraction methods.
  2. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain an electronic lab notebook and ensure accurate, timely data entry.
    • Compile and prepare technical reports related to project work, including contributions to regulatory submission documents (e.g., Common Technical Dossier).
  3. Compliance and Safety:

    • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures, corporate policies, and government regulations.
    • Maintain safe working practices, using personal protective equipment when necessary.
  4. Process Improvement:

    • Support the development of best practices, test methods, and work processes to improve efficiencies in the lab.
  5. Collaboration:

    • Work with multidisciplinary project teams to contribute to defining the final form of APIs and ensure optimal API and drug product performance.

Qualifications:

Must-Have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, engineering, biology, physics, or a related field, with 3+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree (MA/MS) in the same fields.
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
  • A foundational understanding of physical, organic, and analytical chemistry.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience in particle/powder characterization and surface property testing for fine powders, using methods such as electron microscopy, laser diffraction, and atomic force microscopy.
  • A strong interest in learning new experimental and computational technologies and concepts.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to stand at the lab bench to conduct experiments and sit for extended periods for documentation work.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. when necessary.

Travel and Work Schedule:

  • Travel may be required for project meetings, clinical, registration, and validation campaigns at global manufacturing sites.
  • Relocation support may be available.
  • The work location is on-premise, and the position may require additional travel depending on business needs.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base Salary: Ranges from $64,600 to $107,600, with a 7.5% target bonus as part of the Pfizer Global Performance Plan.
