🔬 About the Team – SBX Molecular Engineering

In 2020, Roche Diagnostics acquired Stratos Genomics for its revolutionary Sequencing by Expansion (SBX™) chemistry — a breakthrough nanopore sequencing technology.
The Molecular Engineering team designs and synthesizes molecular building blocks that translate DNA sequences into “Xpandomers,” improving accuracy and throughput of nanopore sequencing.

This team is passionate about pioneering molecular innovation to enhance patient outcomes and the future of genetic analysis.

🎯 Position Objective

The Scientist (Oligo Synthesis) will:

  • Research, design, and execute experiments to engineer and synthesize oligonucleotide-based molecular components.

  • Support the production and optimization of reagents and starting materials.

  • Contribute to advancing SBX nanopore sequencing technology through innovative molecular engineering.

💡 Note: Applicants must include a cover letter describing their interest in SBX technology, technical expertise, and how they can contribute to the team.

⚙️ Key Responsibilities

1. Experimental Design & Execution

  • Design and perform innovative, well-controlled experiments with precision and accuracy.

  • Identify, troubleshoot, and creatively resolve technical challenges.

  • Conduct synthesis using advanced oligo chemistry principles.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, proposing protocol refinements.

2. Production & Process Development

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to aid reagent production.

  • Participate in large-scale reagent and starting material synthesis.

  • Maintain detailed laboratory records and ensure data integrity.

  • Develop and propose process improvements for synthesis and lab workflows.

3. Collaboration & Communication

  • Present findings at team or departmental meetings.

  • Maintain lab organization, safety, and cleanliness.

  • Work collaboratively with molecular engineers and chemists to meet project milestones.

🧬 Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Organic Synthesis, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field.

  • Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience in advanced oligonucleotide synthesis (e.g., non-standard phosphoramidites, branched/cyclic structures, or modified reagents).

Preferred:

  • MS or PhD degree in a relevant discipline (5+ years of experience for BSc; fewer years acceptable with higher degree).

  • Expertise in developing novel oligo synthesis chemistry including:

    • Phosphoramidite coupling

    • Oxidation

    • Detritylation

    • Capping

  • Experience with automated oligo synthesizers and complex fluidic systems.

  • Solid understanding of chemical and biochemical sample handling, including purification and storage.

  • Technical background in next-generation DNA sequencing.

  • Proficiency with HPLC, Mass Spectrometry (MS), NMR, and inert atmosphere handling.
