Overview

Roche is seeking a highly experienced Principal SHE Professional to provide strategic leadership and technical expertise in Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) programs across multiple business functions. This role supports Manufacturing, R&D, Supply Chain, and Facilities, and involves multi-site program ownership within the Bay Area. Candidates will operate with significant autonomy, influencing compliance, sustainability, and operational excellence in one of the world’s most innovative healthcare companies.

This opportunity is ideal for senior-level SHE professionals who excel in regulatory interpretation, cross-functional leadership, and the development of high-impact safety and environmental programs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a SHE Business Partner for assigned functional areas, providing guidance on compliance, regulatory interpretation, and program execution.

  • Lead multi-site Bay Area program ownership, including Hazardous and Biohazardous Waste, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Safety/HMBP, Compressed Gas Safety, and Wastewater Management.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain SHE policies, procedures, and operational standards aligned with regulatory requirements and Roche directives.

  • Facilitate collaboration across departments to establish compliance objectives and sustainability strategies.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for designated program areas, leading improvements and addressing deficiencies through cross-functional teams.

  • Analyze program trends and performance metrics, preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual evaluations.

  • Identify opportunities for system improvements and oversee implementation of enhancements.

  • Conduct hazard evaluations, onsite inspections, and campus-wide audits; support external audits as required.

  • Participate in emergency response planning and serve as an emergency responder when necessary.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior SHE staff and support onboarding for new personnel.

  • Support SHE-related initiatives with impact across Molecular Solutions, divisional operations, and corporate functions.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science, Life Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.

  • 10–12 years of experience managing safety, health, and environmental programs, preferably in biotech, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, chemical, or related industries.

  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.

  • Proven ability to make sound decisions in high-risk and uncertain conditions.

  • Demonstrated leadership in driving cross-functional initiatives and influencing strategic SHE activities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and digital documentation tools.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.

  • Professional certifications such as CIH, CHMM, ASP, CSP, or PE (or the ability to obtain).

  • Experience managing multi-site SHE programs.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Expected Salary Range (California): USD 99,800 – 185,400 annually.
    Final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and geographical factors.

  • Eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus based on performance.

  • Comprehensive benefits package available through Roche.

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
