Role Overview:

The Principal Scientist II / Senior Principal Scientist – Preclinical Statistician will play a key role in building and advancing the preclinical statistics function within the Data Science and Modeling and Simulation team in PK Sciences, part of Translational Medicine at Novartis.

This role is responsible for providing statistical expertise in preclinical research, collaborating with scientists, project teams, and disease areas across Biomedical Research. The candidate will work on experimental design, data analysis, and statistical modeling, ensuring rigorous and innovative statistical methodologies are applied to research and development processes.

This position is based in Cambridge, MA, and is not a remote role.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Statistical Support & Methodology Development:

  • Provide expert statistical support for preclinical studies, covering experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Develop and implement innovative statistical techniques to enhance research methodologies.
  • Ensure the application of statistically sound approaches for the design, analysis, reporting, and interpretation of exploratory and regulatory preclinical studies.
  • Develop automated statistical solutions to streamline data analysis and improve efficiency.

2. Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with scientists, project teams, and disease areas to integrate statistical methodologies into research.
  • Represent preclinical statistics on cross-functional teams, ensuring statistical considerations are effectively incorporated.
  • Collaborate with teams across Biomedical Research to enhance the impact of statistical analysis in drug discovery and development.

3. Leadership & Mentorship (For Senior Principal Scientist Level):

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior statisticians.
  • Support the development of best practices and innovative statistical approaches within the team.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

  • PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • A Master’s degree with additional relevant experience may also be considered.

Experience:

  • For Principal Scientist II: At least 3+ years of experience in preclinical statistics, with knowledge in biology, pharmacology, and toxicology.
  • For Senior Principal Scientist: At least 5-6+ years of experience in preclinical statistics, with a strong understanding of biological, pharmacological, and toxicological principles.

Technical & Soft Skills:

  • Expertise in statistical software and programming languages (e.g., R, SAS, Python).
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
  • Ability to innovate and apply advanced statistical techniques to solve complex research challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industries.
  • Knowledge of drug discovery processes, especially in Oncology or Cardiometabolic Diseases.

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for this position depends on experience and seniority level:

  • Principal Scientist II: $119,700 – $222,300 per year
  • Senior Principal Scientist: $145,600 – $270,400 per year
