Principal Scientist – Oncology Biology (La Jolla, CA)

Job Summary:

Novartis is hiring a Principal Scientist, Biology for its Oncology Biotherapeutics division at its La Jolla, California site. This role offers a chance to lead innovative drug discovery initiatives in oncology, especially in induced proximity drug discovery and targeted protein degradation. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead oncology drug discovery programs from concept through IND-enabling studies

  • Plan and conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments to support drug development

  • Identify and validate molecular targets suitable for induced proximity approaches

  • Lead and mentor bench-facing scientists to achieve scientific milestones

  • Collaborate across functional teams to execute high-impact oncology research

  • Present research progress and strategic insights to leadership and governance teams

  • Drive scientific innovation and cross-functional discovery initiatives


Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline

  • 5–8+ years of relevant industry experience

  • Proven leadership in bench-facing research and scientific program delivery

  • Strong knowledge of cell biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, and chemical genomics

  • Experience in IND documentation and oncology-focused drug discovery

  • Highly organized and quality-driven with excellent communication skills
