🔬 About the Team – Sequencing Workflows & Applications

The Sequencing Workflows and Applications Team is part of Roche’s Research and Early Development division.
Its mission is to develop cutting-edge sequencing applications for Roche’s revolutionary Axelios Sequencing Platform, powered by Sequencing by Expansion (SBX™) technology.

This team bridges molecular innovation with practical, real-world healthcare solutions that enhance patient outcomes.


🎯 Position Objective

The Principal Research Scientist will lead the design and development of novel sequencing workflows and applications that bring SBX™ technology to life.

You will translate scientific potential into clinical impact through:

  • Hands-on experimentation

  • Innovation in workflow design

  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams and external partners

This is a lab-based role for a visionary scientist ready to lead high-impact R&D projects and shape the future of next-generation sequencing (NGS).


⚙️ Key Responsibilities

1. Scientific Innovation & Leadership

  • Design, execute, and optimize novel sequencing workflows using SBX™ and other NGS technologies.

  • Lead complex hands-on laboratory experiments with high scientific rigor.

  • Troubleshoot, interpret, and resolve assay and workflow challenges.

  • Invent and prototype advanced sequencing applications.

2. Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Mentor junior scientists and promote a culture of creativity and scientific excellence.

  • Collaborate with:

    • Commercial and clinical partners

    • External researchers

    • Internal bioinformatics and engineering teams

  • Present scientific findings to internal stakeholders and at external conferences.

3. Data Interpretation & Application Development

  • Analyze complex datasets using standard bioinformatics pipelines and sequencing metrics.

  • Translate technical findings into application notes, publications, and customer-facing materials.

  • Support new product launches through application development and technical documentation.

4. Strategic Contribution

  • Identify and champion emerging technologies that align with Roche’s R&D goals.

  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning and innovation roadmap development.


🧠 Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field.

    • PhD with 3+ years of relevant industry experience, OR

    • Master’s with 6+ years of experience, OR

    • Bachelor’s with 8+ years of experience.

  • Deep understanding of molecular biology for NGS sample preparation.

  • Proven experience in designing and optimizing multiple distinct NGS workflows.

  • Hands-on experience with advanced sequencing methods such as:

    • Single-cell sequencing

    • Protein detection by sequencing

    • Spatial sequencing

  • Proficiency in interpreting bioinformatics outputs and genomic analysis metrics.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.

  • Strong ability to manage multiple complex projects and shifting priorities.


🌟 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple NGS platforms (e.g., Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore).

  • Familiarity with automation systems (e.g., Hamilton, Tecan).

  • Record of scientific innovation, evidenced by patents or peer-reviewed publications.

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC).

  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.


💰 Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: USD 108,400 – 201,200 (based on experience and geography).
