Position Overview

The Principal Bioinformatics Scientist II is a senior scientific and technical leadership role within Roche’s Bioinformatics team, focused on building advanced computational solutions that support molecular diagnostics and genomic research.

This role bridges biological science, software engineering, bioinformatics, and clinical diagnostics, transforming complex biological datasets into actionable scientific and clinical insights.

The candidate will work closely with:

  • Wet-lab scientists
  • Software engineers
  • Clinical researchers
  • R&D teams
  • IT infrastructure teams
  • Quality and compliance stakeholders

This role is responsible for designing scalable computational infrastructure powering PCR assay development, genomic analysis, omics data processing, and clinical diagnostic workflows.


Key Responsibilities

1. Scalable Data Architecture

  • Design and deploy scalable database systems for biological and genomic data.
  • Build robust backend data architectures for high-volume processing.
  • Develop APIs for secure and efficient data retrieval.
  • Optimize data pipelines for performance and scalability.

2. Algorithm Research & Development

  • Lead R&D for high-performance computational algorithms.
  • Develop automated bioinformatics workflows for diagnostic applications.
  • Optimize analysis pipelines for PCR and genomic data.
  • Build reproducible computational frameworks.

3. Full-Stack Application Development

  • Design and develop user-friendly scientific web applications.
  • Create interactive visualization tools for omics and biological datasets.
  • Build frontend dashboards/interfaces using modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Support real-time scientific data exploration.

Preferred frontend technologies:

  • React.js
  • Angular
  • Vue.js

4. Computational Infrastructure Modernization

  • Work in Linux-based scientific computing environments.
  • Manage High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure.
  • Implement software engineering best practices.

 


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / related field + 12+ years experience

OR

  • Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / related field + 10+ years experience

OR

  • PhD in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / related field + 7+ years experience
