Job Overview

As a Medical Coder at Optum, you will be responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10 and CPT-4 codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records. Your work plays a critical role in accurate hospital reimbursement, statistical analysis, and overall healthcare planning. This role requires attention to detail, time management, and adherence to coding accuracy standards.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10 and/or CPT-4 codes to inpatient and/or outpatient records with at least 95% accuracy.

  • Identify, abstract, and code diagnoses and procedures as per departmental and industry guidelines.

  • Complete coding tasks daily as per schedule and meet departmental productivity standards.

  • Participate in team meetings, coding discussions, and skill improvement sessions.

  • Collaborate with hospital and departmental staff to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Attend necessary conference calls and provide coding-related updates.

  • Follow company policies, terms of employment, and be flexible with shift or location changes as required by the business.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate (any discipline)

  • Certified medical coder or fresher with valid certification

  • Accepted certifications:

    • AAPC: CPC (Certified Professional Coder)

    • AHIMA: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder), COC (Certified Outpatient Coder)

  • Proof of valid certification (including certification ID) must be presented during the interview or offer process


Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent time management and task prioritization

  • Strong understanding of coding principles and sequencing

  • Willingness to work flexible hours or extended shifts

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Understanding of how coding impacts hospital reimbursement and data reporting

  • Team-oriented with a professional attitude


Certifications Required

  • At least one valid certification from AAPC or AHIMA: CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC
