Position Overview:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Manager is responsible for the effective implementation and management of the Medical Science Liaison program within one or more therapeutic areas. This includes direct supervision of field-based MSL teams, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, enhancing team performance, and fostering effective collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. The MSL Manager plays a crucial role in driving scientific exchange, gathering insights from healthcare professionals, and providing critical support for Lilly's strategic initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. People Management & Development:

  • Supervise a team of MSLs, managing performance and individual development.
  • Conduct regular coaching sessions, field visits, and provide guidance to improve team effectiveness.
  • Oversee the development of training programs, ensuring MSLs are equipped with scientific knowledge and the skills required for successful interactions with Scientific Experts.
  • Participate in recruitment and staffing, making personnel decisions in line with team goals.
  • Actively contribute to succession planning and talent development within the team.

2. Field Operations Management:

  • Deploy tools, resources, and processes to ensure the effectiveness of field operations.
  • Oversee the MSLs’ commitment to building and maintaining relationships with Scientific Experts and other stakeholders. This will require 40-60% travel, including occasional international trips.
  • Identify key metrics to measure team performance, assess activity reports, and optimize resource allocation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures through regular audits and oversight of field activities.

3. Strategic Planning & Team Optimization:

  • Develop and execute strategic plans to enhance team performance and leverage expertise.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at improving medical expertise, team dynamics, and alignment with corporate priorities.
  • Organize regular team meetings to share best practices, recognize achievements, and foster skills development.
  • Collaborate with internal partners, including therapeutic area CRPs, to ensure strategic alignment.

4. Establish and Maintain Effective Partnerships:

  • Actively engage with Brand Teams and other cross-functional teams to support scientific objectives.
  • Oversee the collection and communication of insights from the field to inform internal decision-making.
  • Participate in building and maintaining relationships with Scientific Experts, providing supplementary support as needed.

5. Scientific and Technical Expertise:

  • Maintain deep scientific knowledge to effectively lead the MSL organization and supervise team members.
  • Stay updated on relevant external regulations and internal procedures to ensure team compliance.
  • Provide guidance on complex technical and scientific matters, both internally and externally.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A degree in health sciences is required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry is required.
  • Experience in medical communications, therapeutic area expertise, or regulated environments is preferred.
  • Proven track record of coaching and developing scientific or technical personnel is highly valued.
  • Previous experience in field-based roles is advantageous.
  • The role requires 40-60% travel, including international trips for company meetings.
