Job Purpose:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based medical expert responsible for in-depth knowledge of disease states, Lilly's compounds, and competitor products within the therapeutic areas they represent. MSLs play a crucial role in facilitating scientific exchanges between the industry and the scientific community, offering insights that help guide Lilly’s research strategies. They also provide crucial information to address important clinical and scientific questions, ultimately shaping the future of healthcare.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintain and Effectively Communicate Deep Scientific Knowledge:

  • Engage in continuous learning to maintain expertise in the therapeutic area.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for accurate, up-to-date medical and scientific knowledge.
  • Answer complex scientific questions from scientific experts, building credibility through peer-level expertise.

2. Excel at Customer Engagement and Support Medical/Scientific Information Needs:

  • Spend the majority of time field-based, engaging in 2-way dialogues with scientific experts and healthcare providers.
  • Use emotional intelligence and a deep understanding of customer needs to deliver the best customer experience.
  • Address customer inquiries with advanced information on disease states and Lilly products.
  • Facilitate collaboration with internal business partners or other Lilly resources to drive research or external collaborations.

3. Strategic Vision and Leadership:

  • Synthesize complex data, delivering meaningful insights to medical and cross-functional teams.
  • Use creative problem-solving skills to execute solutions while leveraging internal resources.
  • Act independently in decision-making, escalating issues when necessary.
  • Contribute to the development of medical strategies, collaborating across teams.

4. Territory Ownership:

  • Demonstrate strategic analysis, planning, and prioritization within the assigned territory.
  • Take ownership of executing the territory plan and ensuring its success while adhering to compliance standards.
  • Maintain a high level of accountability for delivering results and adhering to internal procedures.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in health sciences (PharmD, MD, PhD in a medically related field).
  • Preference for a Medical Degree and/or prior relevant experience in the therapeutic area.
  • Prior MSL experience or field-based experience in building relationships with Scientific Experts and Key Opinion Leaders.
  • Experience providing customer support for complex information needs.
  • Familiarity with health systems, academic communities, and the medical research process is highly valued.

  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 80% within the country, including some weekends.
  • Scientific Curiosity: Strong intellectual curiosity in the therapeutic area of responsibility.
  • Learning Agility: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex scientific data clearly and concisely.
  • Independence & Organization: Self-directed, capable of managing multiple priorities effectively while working independently in the field.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong strategic and critical thinking to evaluate information and its relevance to future states.
  • Presentation & Research: Advanced presentation skills and expertise in identifying scientific literature.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to build professional relationships.
