Job Summary

Optum is hiring a Medical Director – Oncology to lead evidence-based oncology utilization review and support case and disease management teams in achieving optimal clinical outcomes. This remote leadership position involves applying NCCN guidelines, collaborating with healthcare providers, and driving initiatives to enhance oncology care quality and cost-effectiveness across the US.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform oncology utilization review determinations to ensure evidence-based care.

  • Collaborate with treating providers telephonically to discuss care plans and quality gaps.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on NCCN guidelines and oncology best practices.

  • Provide clinical education and mentorship to oncology nursing teams.

  • Evaluate clinical, claims, and utilization data to identify quality improvement opportunities.

  • Support enterprise-wide oncology research and clinical initiatives.

  • Represent Optum in professional medical societies and stakeholder discussions.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • MD or DO with an active, unrestricted medical license (additional licenses as required).

  • Board Certification in Oncology (ABMS or AOBMS).

  • 5+ years of clinical oncology practice experience.

  • Strong knowledge of NCCN guidelines and evidence-based oncology care.

  • Expertise in utilization management, case management, and quality improvement.

  • Ability to participate in rotational holiday and call coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managed care or payer-based healthcare.

  • Background in quality management or peer review processes.
