Job Overview

The Medical Coder – Surgery is responsible for accurate and compliant coding of diagnoses, procedures and modifiers for hospital and outpatient surgery settings. Working under direct supervision, the role involves reviewing medical records, assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II codes and ensuring adherence to regulatory updates, industry guidelines and client-specific requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review, verify and abstract essential clinical information from medical records to assign accurate codes for multispecialty outpatient surgery centers and hospital settings

  • Maintain coding productivity standards by completing 4–6 charts per hour while meeting established quality benchmarks

  • Stay updated with AMA, AHA and CMS guideline revisions and ensure timely implementation

  • Identify appropriate CPT codes for surgical procedures and apply correct modifiers in accordance with NCCI edits and CPT guidance

  • Review NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage policies and adjust ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes as required

  • Collaborate effectively within a large team and contribute to quality enhancement and productivity improvement

  • Organize, prioritize and complete coding tasks in compliance with regulatory and client timelines

  • Ensure strict adherence to patient data confidentiality, HIPAA policies and system security standards

  • Follow organizational policies, work directives, shift requirements and operational changes as business needs evolve


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences

  • Certified medical coder through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CCS, CIC or COC accepted)

  • Freshers with valid certification can apply

  • For experienced candidates, a minimum of 6 months in multispecialty surgery coding or surgery with E/M coding is preferred

  • Understanding of surgical specialties such as Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Otolaryngology and related domains

  • Strong foundation in medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS and modifier guidelines
