About the Role

Optum is seeking a skilled Medical Coder – Surgery to ensure accurate coding of professional surgical services across multispecialty outpatient and hospital settings. This role plays a key part in supporting clinical operations, regulatory compliance, and medical documentation quality. You will work in a technology-enabled environment dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes through precision and integrity.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review, verify, and abstract data from medical records to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes with correct modifiers.

  • Code 4–6 surgical charts per hour while maintaining the required quality benchmarks.

  • Stay updated with the latest AMA, AHA, CMS, Coding Clinic, and NCCI guidelines.

  • Apply correct CPT codes and assign modifiers in accordance with NCCI edits and CPT rules.

  • Review LCD and NCD coverage policies and update ICD-10-CM, CPT, and modifiers accordingly.

  • Collaborate with team members to enhance quality, accuracy, and productivity.

  • Prioritize and manage coding workflow to ensure timely completion and compliance with client and regulatory standards.

  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA requirements for secure handling of patient information.

  • Follow company policies, procedures, and operational guidelines, including shifts, team assignments, and changing business needs.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate in Life Sciences (mandatory).

  • Valid certification from AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC).

  • Ability to provide valid certification ID during the interview or offer stage.

  • Minimum 6 months of experience in multispecialty surgery coding and/or Surgery + E&M coding.

  • Hands-on experience with coding in specialties such as Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Otolaryngology.

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Modifiers, including NCCI guidelines.
