Position Summary

The Medical Coder – Surgery is responsible for accurately coding professional surgical services by analyzing medical records and assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes with appropriate modifiers. This role ensures compliance with coding conventions, regulatory guidelines, and client policies across multispecialty surgical settings.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Review and abstract relevant data from medical records to assign accurate codes for multispecialty outpatient surgery centers and hospitals.

  • Code 4–6 charts per hour while maintaining accuracy and meeting quality benchmarks.

  • Stay up-to-date and implement changes from AMA, AHA, and CMS coding guidelines.

  • Determine the correct CPT codes for surgical procedures and apply appropriate modifiers as per NCCI edits and CPT rules.

  • Validate NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage, and adjust ICD-10-CM, CPT, and modifiers accordingly.

  • Collaborate effectively with team members to improve overall coding quality and productivity.

  • Prioritize and organize workloads to ensure timely completion and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure HIPAA compliance for all patient and system data.

  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and directives, including reassignment or workflow adjustments as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Graduate in Life Sciences.

  • Certification: Valid and active coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA.

    • Accepted certifications: CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC (any one).

    • Proof of certification (with valid ID number) required during interview or offer process.

  • Experience: Minimum 6+ months in multispecialty surgery and/or surgery with E&M coding.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, Modifiers, and HCPCS guidelines.

    • Hands-on experience coding surgical services in Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Otolaryngology, and other specialties.

  • Knowledge: Strong foundation in medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
