Role Overview

The Medical Coder is responsible for accurate inpatient and outpatient medical coding, including diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers, based on medical records. The role ensures compliance with international coding standards and healthcare regulations.


Key Responsibilities

1. Medical Coding

  • Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes

  • Assign ICD-10-PCS procedure codes

  • Apply appropriate coding modifiers

  • Code inpatient and multi-specialty medical records accurately


2. Medical Record Analysis

  • Review and analyze patient medical records

  • Ensure correct interpretation of clinical documentation

  • Validate coding accuracy based on clinical data


3. Compliance & Guidelines Adherence

  • Follow ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting

  • Follow ICD-10-PCS guidelines for surgical coding

  • Adhere to AHA Coding Clinic standards

  • Follow client-specific coding guidelines


4. Quality & Accuracy

  • Ensure high accuracy in coding assignments

  • Maintain compliance with organizational quality standards

  • Support audit readiness and coding quality checks


5. Operational Responsibilities

  • Work under supervision and follow assigned workflows

  • Adapt to changes in teams, shifts, and work processes as required

  • Follow company policies and directives


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Life Science or Allied Medical Graduate


Certification

  • AAPC or AHIMA certification required

  • CIC certification preferred


Required Experience

  • 2+ years in Evaluation & Management (E/M) coding (OP or IP)

  • 1+ year in IP DRG coding OR surgical coding

  • 8+ months in ancillary coding


Key Skills Required

Technical Skills

  • ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding expertise

  • Understanding of DRG classification systems

  • Knowledge of surgical and hospital coding workflows

  • Familiarity with coding guidelines and compliance standards


Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Analytical thinking

  • Ability to work under supervision and follow structured processes

  • Adaptability to changing workflows and requirements

  • Strong documentation discipline
