Job Overview

Optum is seeking an experienced Medical Coder – IP DRG to join its Medical & Clinical Operations team. This role is ideal for certified medical coding professionals with expertise in inpatient diagnosis-related group (IP DRG) coding, healthcare documentation review, and regulatory compliance.

The selected candidate will be responsible for accurately reviewing inpatient medical records, assigning standardized diagnosis and procedure codes, ensuring coding compliance, and meeting productivity and quality benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities

As a Medical Coder – IP DRG, you will:

Medical Coding & Documentation Review

  • Review and code inpatient medical records using:
    • ICD-10-CM
    • ICD-10-PCS
    • DRG coding methodologies
  • Ensure coding accuracy according to defined Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Interpret clinical documentation and assign appropriate diagnosis and procedural codes.
  • Identify inconsistencies, discrepancies, or incomplete medical documentation.
  • Raise coding queries and escalate documentation issues to appropriate stakeholders and supervisors when required.

Compliance & Regulatory Standards

Ensure compliance with:

  • HIPAA regulations
  • CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) coding requirements
  • American Hospital Association (AHA) official coding guidelines
  • ICD-10 inpatient coding standards
  • Internal client coding standards
  • Organizational compliance policies

For inpatient encounters:

  • Apply official coding conventions and regulatory standards accurately.
  • Report discharge disposition in accordance with CMS rules and documentation requirements.

Productivity & Quality Management

  • Meet defined productivity targets, coding accuracy benchmarks, and turnaround time commitments.
  • Maintain minimum data quality standards as per:
    • KRAs
    • Client SLAs
    • Internal quality expectations
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of assigned coding tasks.
  • Maintain coding consistency and compliance across all assigned records.

Team & Operational Responsibilities

  • Follow company operational procedures and compliance expectations.
  • Adapt to business requirements, including team or work assignment changes if necessary.
  • Maintain secure handling of patient data and confidentiality standards.

Required Qualifications

Education

Candidates must possess:

Graduate or Postgraduate degree in one of the following:

  • Life Sciences
  • Allied Medicine
  • BHMS
  • BAMS
  • BPT
  • Dental Sciences
  • Pharmacy
  • Nursing
  • Related healthcare disciplines

Mandatory Certifications

Candidates must hold certification from:

  • AAPC
    OR
  • AHIMA

Accepted certifications include:

  • CCS
  • CPC
  • CPC-H
  • CCS-P

Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Minimum 1+ year of experience in:
    • Inpatient medical coding
    • IP DRG coding
    • Hospital coding operations

Preferred experience in:

  • U.S. healthcare coding
  • Inpatient coding workflows
  • Clinical documentation review
