Job Overview

Optum is seeking an experienced Medical Coder – ED Facility to join its Medical & Clinical Operations team in Hyderabad. This role is ideal for certified medical coding professionals with expertise in emergency department coding, evaluation and management coding, and healthcare documentation review.

The selected candidate will be responsible for accurate coding of professional medical services by reviewing clinical documentation, assigning standardized diagnosis and procedure codes, and ensuring compliance with healthcare coding regulations and payer guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

As a Medical Coder – ED Facility, you will:

Medical Coding & Documentation Review

  • Review and analyze medical records from:
    • Emergency Department (ED) settings
    • Urgent Care Centers
    • Hospital/clinic environments
  • Accurately assign:
    • ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
    • CPT procedure codes
    • HCPCS Level II codes
    • Applicable modifiers
  • Verify and abstract relevant clinical data from medical records for coding accuracy.
  • Review documentation for:
    • Minor surgical procedures
    • Vaccinations
    • Laboratory CPT coding
    • Screening CPT codes
    • PQRS coding requirements

Compliance & Coding Standards

Ensure coding compliance with:

  • ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  • CPT coding guidelines
  • HCPCS coding standards
  • CMS updates
  • American Hospital Association (AHA) Coding Clinic guidance
  • AMA coding updates
  • NCCI Edits
  • LCD (Local Coverage Determination)
  • NCD (National Coverage Determination)
  • Client-specific coding guidelines
  • HIPAA confidentiality requirements

Productivity & Quality Management

  • Maintain productivity target of 12 charts per hour while meeting defined quality benchmarks.
  • Track and implement updates to coding regulations and industry standards.
  • Perform coding accuracy checks and necessary code modifications.
  • Determine correct Evaluation & Management (E/M) levels based on Medical Decision Making (MDM).
  • Apply appropriate modifiers according to payer and compliance rules.
  • Resolve coding edits within required turnaround times.
  • Organize workload efficiently to ensure compliance with operational timelines.

Team Collaboration & Operational Support

  • Work collaboratively within a large coding team environment.
  • Provide productivity and quality improvement suggestions.
  • Support team performance enhancement initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of patient healthcare data.
  • Follow company operational policies and compliance procedures.

Required Qualifications

Education

Candidates must possess:

  • Life Sciences Degree
    OR
  • Allied Medical Degree

Mandatory certification from:

  • AAPC
    OR
  • AHIMA

Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in:
    • Multi-specialty Evaluation & Management (E/M) medical coding
    • Professional medical coding
    • Emergency Department coding
    • Critical Care coding

Preferred experience in:

  • Hospital coding environments
  • Urgent care coding
  • Professional fee coding
