Medical Coder – Surgery

Role Overview

Under direct supervision, the Medical Coder – Surgery is responsible for accurately coding diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers for professional surgical services in hospital and clinic settings. The role follows ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, CMS, NCCI, AHA, and client-specific guidelines to ensure compliant and accurate coding.


Primary Responsibilities

1. Coding & Data Abstraction

  • Review and abstract relevant information from medical records.

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes with appropriate modifiers.

  • Code 4–6 charts per hour while meeting quality standards.

  • Apply coding for multispecialty outpatient surgery centers and hospitals.

2. Guideline & Compliance Management

  • Stay updated with AMA, AHA, and CMS guideline changes.

  • Apply NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage rules, and modify CPT/ICD codes accordingly.

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, security protocols, and confidentiality policies.

3. Quality, Productivity & Workflow

  • Prioritize and organize workload to meet regulatory and client turnaround timelines.

  • Resolve coding edits and discrepancies within required timeframes.

  • Work collaboratively with the team to improve productivity and quality.

4. Documentation Integrity & System Security

  • Maintain high accuracy and confidentiality of coded data.

  • Follow system security standards and company policies.

  • Adapt to organizational changes such as team shifts, work location adjustments, and business requirements.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate in Life Sciences (mandatory).

  • AAPC/AHIMA Certified Coder – CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC (any one accepted).

  • Must provide valid certification ID during interview/offer stage.

  • Minimum 6+ months of experience in:

    • Multispecialty Surgery Coding

    • Or Surgery with E/M Coding

  • Hands-on experience coding surgical services across specialties:
    Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, ENT (Otolaryngology), etc.

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Medical Terminology

    • Human Anatomy & Physiology

    • ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Modifiers
