Primary Function:

The Medical Assistant (MA) will provide high-quality, team-based patient care under the direct supervision of a clinician. The role includes both clinical and administrative responsibilities to promote health and wellness in a safe and friendly environment. The MA will support clinicians and care management teams in chronic disease management, examinations, and treatment of pediatric patients.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Patient Care & Clinical Support:

    • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for patients.
    • Maintain office and exam room cleanliness, ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment.
    • Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
  2. Patient Assessment & Documentation:

    • Record patient vitals (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate).
    • Notify clinicians of abnormal findings.
    • Conduct age-appropriate patient interviews and update medical records, including:
      • Chief complaint
      • Current medications (drug name, dose, route)
      • Allergies (medication & food, including reaction severity)
      • Medical, surgical, family, and social history
      • Barriers to care and home status
  3. Clinical Procedures & Assistance:

    • Prepare patients for examinations and assist clinicians in necessary procedures.
    • Perform age-appropriate screenings (vision, hearing, ECGs) and repeat as needed.
    • Assist in procedures such as suture removal, wound care, ear lavage, catheterization, and emergency response under supervision.
  4. Medication & Vaccine Administration:

    • Conduct vaccine and medication reconciliation.
    • Provide vaccine information statements and patient education.
    • Ensure proper handling, storage, preparation, and administration of vaccines.
    • Administer medications via intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous routes using proper identification and buddy validation processes.
  5. Administrative & Follow-Up Responsibilities:

    • Handle patient follow-ups, phone calls, correspondence, and prescription refill requests.
    • Obtain medication pre-authorizations and assist with referrals.
    • Complete patient forms (DME, therapy, school clearance, sports, medication, etc.).
    • Arrange home/hospital care, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
  6. Laboratory & Diagnostics:

    • Perform phlebotomy, collect and process lab samples, and document results.
    • Report lab findings to clinicians per protocol.
  7. Performance Standards & Compliance:

    • Maintain compliance with best practice standards and key performance indicators.
    • Adhere to organizational information security policies, protecting sensitive patient information per federal, state, and local regulations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work Conditions:

    • Direct patient care setting
    • 15%-20% travel to other office locations (reimbursed per company policy)
    • Medical Assistant float staff may be assigned to multiple office locations
    • Indoor work environment with potential exposure to hazards
    • Operation of computers and medical equipment
    • Excessive noise and extreme temperatures possible
  • Physical Requirements:

    • Standing and walking for extended periods
    • Lifting/carrying up to 20 lbs., pushing/pulling 41-200 lbs.
    • Bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching above shoulders
    • Manual dexterity and ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Foreign-trained medical doctors must have a Bachelor of Science in General Medicine from a regionally accredited university or equivalent.

Licensure & Certification:

  • MA Diploma/Certification required OR a minimum of 1 year of Medical Assistant experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Valid driver’s license required upon hire and throughout employment.

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of Medical Assistant experience preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills to support pediatric patients and families.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, immunization procedures, and medical safety standards.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize tasks efficiently.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills, including emergency response capability.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
