Grad Intern - Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (Proteomics Focus)

What You Will Do
Let’s change the world together! In this internship, you will work within the Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (PKDM) group at Amgen to develop innovative drug discovery techniques supporting multiple therapeutic programs in research and development. Your work will focus on drug-target engagement, mechanisms of action, and discovering biomarkers to facilitate drug development.

The intern will be responsible for performing cell culture, sample preparation, reagent screening, LC-MS/MS method development, and data analysis. You’ll also keep an electronic laboratory notebook and communicate results with project teams.

The PKDM department is dedicated to discovering and developing novel, effective, and safe medicines. In close partnership with medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacology, and regulatory teams, you will help design promising clinical candidates, conduct preclinical studies, support clinical evaluations, and contribute to IND and NDA filings.

You will work with a team to develop and optimize untargeted proteomics workflows to identify unknown protein adducts from small molecule drugs and their metabolites. A targeted LCMS workflow will also be developed to validate and quantify these adducts. The intern will implement these workflows into early drug discovery programs to provide mechanistic insights for decision-making. Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and summarizing project-related literature.
  • Designing and implementing experiments.
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data within the PKDM team.

What We Expect of You
We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong proteomics background. Here’s what we expect:

Basic Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older.
  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program (preferably in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related field) and completed at least one year of graduate study before the internship begins.
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university during the internship.
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts.
  • Must be located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree concentration in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related field.
  • Basic training in LCMS.
  • Understanding of enzyme inactivation mechanisms.
  • Hands-on experience in proteomic MS sample preparation (biological processing, enzymatic digestion, SPE, etc.) and LCMS.
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic about science and problem-solving.

What You Can Expect of Us
Amgen is committed to your professional and personal growth. With competitive benefits and a collaborative culture, we’ll support your journey every step of the way.
