Job Overview

Merck KGaA is seeking a highly experienced Director, Strategy and Innovation to drive strategic transformation and innovation within the Global Medical Writing function. This leadership role focuses on advancing organizational capabilities through artificial intelligence, data-driven initiatives, and digital transformation strategies.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping global medical writing operations by implementing advanced technologies, strengthening data capabilities, and enabling strategic decision-making. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and cross-functional collaboration to support innovation across research and development and healthcare operations.


Key Responsibilities

Drive strategic direction and innovation initiatives within the Global Medical Writing function through AI and data-driven solutions.

Develop and execute strategies that leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics to improve operational efficiency and business outcomes.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Medical Writing leadership, Regulatory Quality and Safety teams, Research and Development Data and Digital IT teams, and external partners to ensure alignment with global business objectives.

Lead organizational transformation by fostering data literacy, digital adoption, and AI-driven decision-making across teams.

Provide leadership, mentorship, and strategic guidance to team members while building a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Identify emerging technologies and evaluate opportunities to integrate advanced digital solutions into global medical writing processes.

Manage complex stakeholder environments and ensure effective communication across internal and external partners.

Support harmonization of data and digital strategies across global research, regulatory, and healthcare functions.

Drive change management initiatives and ensure successful adoption of new technologies and operational frameworks.


Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Life Sciences, Data Science, Information Technology, Business, or related fields.

Advanced degree preferred (MBA, PhD, or equivalent) with focus on artificial intelligence, data science, digital transformation, or related domains.


Experience Required

Minimum 12 years of professional experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare industry within an international environment.

Proven experience in strategic leadership roles focused on innovation, digital transformation, or AI-driven initiatives.

Demonstrated experience in medical writing environments is strongly preferred.

Strong track record of managing global stakeholders and leading cross-functional strategic projects.

Experience implementing data analytics and AI solutions in regulated environments is highly desirable.
