Job Description:

The Coder at Optum is responsible for coding inpatient and/or outpatient medical records, identifying diagnoses and procedures, and ensuring accurate medical information indexing. This position plays a key role in accurate hospital reimbursement and statistical planning. The coder will work in alignment with departmental guidelines, coding standards (ICD-10, CPT-4), and productivity targets, ensuring accuracy in the assignment of codes while maintaining an understanding of the position's impact on both the department and the hospital.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Code medical records for inpatient and outpatient records, ensuring correct diagnoses and procedures are indexed daily

  • Accurately assign ICD-10 and CPT-4 codes with no less than 95% accuracy

  • Identify and abstract records, meeting departmental productivity standards

  • Actively participate in coding meetings and education conferences to maintain coding skills and improve accuracy

  • Demonstrate time management skills by consistently meeting deadlines and minimizing non-essential interruptions

  • Willingness to work additional or changing hours based on department needs

  • Establish cooperative relationships with hospital staff and department members

  • Comply with company policies, including changes in work locations, shifts, and benefits policies, as needed


Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate degree

  • Certification: Certified Coder through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC)

  • Experience:

    • Freshers with certifications accepted

    • For experienced candidates: 0 to 1 year of medical coding experience (G23)

  • Certification Proof: Must provide proof of current coding certifications (CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC) during the interview or offer process
