About the Role
Fortrea, a leading global contract research organization (CRO), is seeking a Chief Data Officer (CDO) to shape and drive the future of data across our clinical, commercial, and corporate operations. This executive role is responsible for defining Fortrea’s global data strategy, leading enterprise data architecture, and integrating cutting-edge tools that enable AI/ML innovation, advanced analytics, and real-time decision-making.

The CDO will collaborate with senior leadership and global teams to ensure secure, compliant, and high-value data ecosystems across internal platforms and client systems, supporting transformative clinical research initiatives worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy and execution for Fortrea’s enterprise-wide data models, integration platforms, and analytics tools.

  • Define and enforce data governance, standards, and security frameworks to ensure compliance, integrity, and interoperability (HIPAA and global standards).

  • Architect and oversee migration from legacy systems to modern platforms, including Azure SQL, Synapse, and Lakehouse solutions.

  • Direct system integrations using Microsoft technologies: Azure Logic Apps, Service Bus, Power Automate, and API Management.

  • Drive business intelligence and reporting through dashboards, data storytelling, and predictive analytics.

  • Deliver a strategic technical roadmap aligning data capabilities with clinical, commercial, and corporate goals.

  • Inspire and manage high-performing global teams, fostering innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development.

  • Lead AI/ML initiatives with ethical, explainable frameworks for responsible and scalable implementation.

  • Serve as a senior ambassador with clients, ensuring seamless delivery, strategic innovation, and growth opportunities.

  • Microsoft Stack: Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Logic Apps, Azure Functions

  • Power Platform: Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate

  • Microsoft Purview, Azure Arc, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards

  • Integration & ETL: REST/SOAP APIs, JSON, XML, EDI, Spark, Python, SQL

  • Architecture & DevOps: TOGAF, Azure Well-Architected Framework, CI/CD pipelines, Azure Test Plans

Experience Required

  • 15+ years in senior leadership or executive roles, with proven success influencing business, technology, and project outcomes.

  • Expertise in data lifecycle management, integration technologies (API Gateway, ESB, Message Broker), and data management frameworks (DAMA-DMBOK).

  • Experience in clinical research, pharmaceuticals, or related industries with strong knowledge of data privacy, compliance, and security.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead global, high-performing teams and manage complex, large-scale data initiatives.

  • Strategic thinker with hands-on execution capabilities and a track record of delivering measurable business impact.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (Master’s/MBA preferred).

  • Relevant certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect, Azure Data Engineer, or Microsoft Power Platform are highly desirable.
