Job Title: Organic Chemist (Synthesis)

Role Overview:

The Organic Chemist will be responsible for executing synthesis routes and designing molecules as per client specifications. This role requires both independent work and supervision of a team of chemists. The key responsibilities include reaction setup, execution, monitoring, and purification to deliver high-quality compounds. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring safety, data integrity, and the timely delivery of projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Synthesis of Target Molecules: Set up and execute reactions for the synthesis of target molecules according to client specifications.
  • Client Deliverables: Understand project requirements and deliverables, ensuring quality and efficiency throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Literature Research: Perform literature searches as needed to understand reaction protocols and optimize the synthesis process.
  • Team Management: Delegate tasks efficiently and monitor team members to ensure effective planning, execution, and timely delivery of projects.
  • Safety and Compliance: Review and discuss Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) with team members and mitigate safety risks under supervision.
  • Reaction Planning and Execution: Plan and execute reactions with proper reagents and equipment, maintaining specified conditions such as temperature and pressure while minimizing waste.
  • Process Monitoring: Use analytical techniques to monitor reaction progress and ensure quality control of synthesized compounds.
  • Purification and Workup: Identify and apply appropriate workup and purification techniques to obtain desired compounds.
  • Analytical Data: Analyze and interpret results from synthesis to report findings effectively.
  • Productivity Benchmarks: Meet productivity benchmarks, including the number of reactions, steps, compounds, and quality targets within project timelines.
  • Project Management: Support project managers by identifying risks, proposing synthetic routes, and contributing to cost-benefit analysis for efficient delivery.
  • Reporting: Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and final project reports as per client requirements.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate lab notebooks and ensure IP confidentiality, data integrity, and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Continuous Improvement: Ensure safety and quality systems are followed in the lab, contributing to overall team productivity and learning.

Leadership and Team Development:

  • Skill Development: Enhance team members' knowledge of organic chemistry and analytical techniques through training and one-on-one discussions.
  • Team Guidance: Guide a team of chemists to meet productivity and quality targets, ensuring high morale and skill development.
  • Performance Review: Regularly review the performance of team members, providing feedback and guidance for growth.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
    • MSc in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with 1–5 years of relevant experience, OR
    • Ph.D. / PDF in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry with 1–3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience: Experience in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction design, and execution.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Research publications in leading journals would be an added advantage.

Desired Skills:

  • Chemical Knowledge: Strong understanding of organic chemistry, particularly synthesis and purification techniques.
  • Safety Protocols: Knowledge of lab safety protocols, including handling hazardous materials.
  • IP & Data Integrity: Ability to maintain confidentiality of intellectual property (IP) and ensure data integrity throughout the project.
  • Cost Optimization: Ability to perform cost-benefit analysis and optimize the use of resources in the synthesis process.
