Associate Metadata Librarian – MARC21 & Bibliographic Cataloguing

Job Overview

A globally recognized information services organization is hiring an Associate Metadata Librarian to support academic and government-focused library databases. This role is centered on MARC21 cataloguing, bibliographic metadata creation, subject classification, and quality assurance of structured library records.

The position is ideal for professionals with a background in Library Science who possess strong knowledge of cataloguing standards, authority control, and metadata governance. The selected candidate will play a key role in improving content discoverability and maintaining metadata accuracy across digital library platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform copy cataloguing to create and update MARC21 bibliographic records for books, journals, and multimedia content

  • Apply established cataloguing standards including MARC rules, Library of Congress authority files, and Dewey Decimal Classification

  • Ensure accurate subject classification and metadata consistency to enhance searchability and discoverability

  • Import and maintain bibliographic records using automated content ingestion workflows

  • Conduct metadata validation and quality assurance using internal documentation and validation tools

  • Assist in resolving customer queries related to catalogued records

  • Develop comprehensive understanding of library products, metadata structures, and end-user requirements

Required Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree and/or Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLIS preferred) or a related discipline.

Experience:
1–3 years of professional experience in library cataloguing, bibliographic metadata management, or academic content classification. Fresh graduates with strong MARC21 expertise may also be considered.

Technical Skills:

  • Working knowledge of MARC21 cataloguing format

  • Familiarity with Library of Congress authority control and Dewey Decimal System

  • Understanding of metadata standards and bibliographic record structures

  • Experience with automated ingestion systems preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic publishing or scholarly content environments
