Role Summary

The Associate Medical Coder performs coding of inpatient and outpatient medical records for accurate indexing, hospital statistics, and reimbursement. The role requires consistent accuracy, productivity, and collaboration with hospital staff, while adhering to coding standards and departmental guidelines.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Code inpatient and/or outpatient records daily according to departmental schedules.

  • Accurately assign ICD-10 and/or CPT-4 codes, maintaining ≥95% accuracy in code selection and sequencing.

  • Identify and abstract records consistently and accurately.

  • Meet departmental productivity standards for coding and record entry.

  • Demonstrate time awareness, meeting deadlines and minimizing non-essential interruptions.

  • Participate in coding meetings and education conferences to maintain skills and accuracy.

  • Exhibit willingness and flexibility to work additional or modified hours.

  • Understand the impact of the position on departmental and hospital operations.

  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with departmental and hospital staff.

  • Attend conference calls as necessary to provide coding-related information.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree.

  • Certified coder through AAPC or AHIMA.

  • Accepted certifications: CPC, CCS, CIC, COC.

  • Fresher or candidates with 0–1 year of medical coding experience (G23).

  • Must provide proof of current coding certification with valid identification during interview/offer process.
