Associate Consultant – Gastroenterology

Role Summary

The Associate Consultant Gastroenterologist is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical care to patients with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and liver disorders. The role includes outpatient consultations, inpatient management, emergency GI care, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, multidisciplinary collaboration, and participation in academic and research activities.

The position offers an opportunity for newly qualified Gastroenterologists to build expertise in advanced endoscopy, hepatology, and clinical gastroenterology within a tertiary care hospital environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Patient Care

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.

  • Conduct outpatient consultations and follow-up clinics.

  • Provide inpatient care and daily ward rounds.

  • Develop individualized treatment and management plans.

  • Coordinate patient care with referring physicians and multidisciplinary teams.


2. Endoscopy & Interventional Procedures

Perform and assist in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including:

  • Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EGD)

  • Colonoscopy

  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

  • Polypectomy

  • Endoscopic Hemostasis

  • Foreign Body Removal

  • PEG Tube Placement (where credentialed)

  • ERCP/EUS assistance and progression toward independent practice (as per privileges)

Ensure adherence to patient safety standards and procedural protocols.


3. Hepatology & Gastroenterology Management

  • Diagnose and manage:

    • Chronic Liver Disease

    • Viral Hepatitis

    • Cirrhosis

    • Portal Hypertension

    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

    • Gastrointestinal Bleeding

    • Functional GI Disorders

    • Pancreatic Disorders

  • Participate in liver disease management programs.


4. Emergency Gastroenterology Services

  • Attend GI emergencies including:

    • Acute GI Bleeding

    • Acute Pancreatitis

    • Severe Hepatic Decompensation

    • Foreign Body Ingestion

    • Acute Cholangitis

  • Coordinate urgent endoscopic interventions as required.


5. Diagnostic Evaluation & Clinical Documentation

  • Interpret:

    • Laboratory Investigations

    • Histopathology Reports

    • Imaging Studies (CT, MRI, Ultrasound)

    • Endoscopy Findings

  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and EMR records.

  • Prepare discharge summaries and procedure reports.


6. Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Follow hospital quality and patient safety standards.

  • Ensure infection prevention and control compliance.

  • Participate in accreditation and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain adherence to NABH and regulatory requirements.


7. Academic & Research Activities

  • Participate in:

    • Clinical Audits

    • Research Projects

    • Publications

    • Case Presentations

    • CME Programs

    • Departmental Academic Meetings

  • Contribute to resident and fellow teaching activities.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • MBBS

  • MD / DNB General Medicine

  • DM / DNB Gastroenterology (Mandatory)


Licensure

  • Valid NMC / State Medical Council Registration


Preferred Experience

  • 0–2 years post DM/DNB experience

  • Hands-on experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy

  • Exposure to hepatology clinics and liver disease management

  • Experience managing GI emergencies
