What is HEOR?

HEOR stands for Health Economics and Outcomes Research.

It is a multidisciplinary field that assesses the value of healthcare interventions and treatments in terms of their economic impact and clinical outcomes. HEOR combines elements of health economics, epidemiology, statistics, and other research methodologies to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and overall value of healthcare interventions.

In the context of HEOR, "outcomes" refer to the results or effects of medical treatments or healthcare interventions on patients' health and well-being. These outcomes can include improvements in patient's quality of life, reductions in disease severity, extended life expectancy, and other health-related measures.

HEOR research is essential for healthcare decision-makers, including policymakers, payers (such as insurance companies or government health agencies), and healthcare providers. By conducting HEOR studies, decision-makers can make more informed choices about which treatments and interventions to fund or recommend, ensuring that resources are used efficiently to improve patient outcomes.

Some common methodologies used in HEOR studies include cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, budget impact analysis, and patient-reported outcomes research. These studies help inform healthcare policy, reimbursement decisions, and clinical practice guidelines.
