Data Interpretation

Data Interpretation

Data Interpretation is an important part of the Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude section in most placement tests and competitive exams. It evaluates a candidate’s ability to analyse, interpret, and draw conclusions from data presented in different formats such as tables, graphs, charts, and diagrams.

In this section, candidates are given a set of data along with several questions based on that data. The task is to carefully study the information, interpret it correctly, and answer the questions using logical and numerical reasoning.

Candidates are expected to:

  • Extract relevant information from the data

  • Identify patterns and trends

  • Make comparisons between different data points

  • Perform basic calculations such as averages, percentages, ratios, and differences

  • Draw logical conclusions based on the given data

The Data Interpretation section tests a candidate’s:

  • Analytical thinking

  • Numerical ability

  • Logical reasoning

  • Speed and accuracy in calculations

  • Decision-making based on data

Success in this section requires strong fundamentals in mathematics, quick calculation skills, and the ability to interpret data efficiently.

Example 1

The table below shows the number of vehicles produced by a car manufacturer in different years.

Year Number of Vehicles
2016 500
2017 800
2018 1200

  1. Calculate the percentage increase in vehicle production from 2016 to 2020.

  2. In which year did the manufacturer experience the highest growth rate?

  3. Calculate the average number of vehicles produced per year.

Example 2

The table below displays the scores obtained by five students in different subjects.

Student Math Science English History
A 80 90 85 75
B 75 85 80 90
C 90 80 70 80
D 85 70 75 85

Questions:

  1. Which student had the highest average score across all subjects?

  2. Calculate the average score in Science for all students.

  3. In which subject did Student C perform the best?
