Position Overview

The Scientific Director (Publications) plays a key leadership role within the Medical Communications team. This position will oversee multiple client accounts, ensure the scientific accuracy and quality of deliverables, and support the development of strategic publication plans. The role requires a blend of scientific expertise, editorial oversight, team leadership, and client relationship management.

The Scientific Director will guide medical writers, oversee training needs, maintain compliance with publication standards, and support business development initiatives. This is a remote role available to candidates located in the US or Canada.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Scientific Leadership

  • Provide scientific direction and develop strategy for medical communication programs.

  • Lead the creation of core scientific deliverables, including scientific communication platforms, publication plans, lexicons, and dossiers.

  • Offer strategic and scientific guidance for business development initiatives and client presentations.

Content Development & Editorial Oversight

  • Ensure all deliverables—manuscripts, abstracts, slide decks, and related content—meet accuracy, quality, and compliance standards.

  • Review and provide detailed scientific and editorial feedback on medical writing outputs.

  • Maintain current knowledge of publication ethics, good publication practices (GPP), and ICMJE guidelines.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain sustainable client relationships to support account stability and growth.

  • Interact with external thought leaders, faculty, and internal clinical and medical affairs teams.

  • Represent Red Nucleus at client meetings, advisory boards, and training sessions in a professional manner.

Team Management & Mentoring

  • Manage senior and junior medical writers, identify training needs, and implement effective training programs.

  • Set performance standards and ensure adherence to quality benchmarks across teams.

  • Support junior employees with content development and scientific queries.

Project & Operational Excellence

  • Work closely with account and project managers to ensure deliverables are well resourced, aligned with timelines, and completed within budget.

  • Handle multiple projects and client accounts simultaneously with strong organizational oversight.

  • Continuously comply with internal processes, editorial procedures, and ethical standards.


Experience Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a medical communications agency in a Scientific Director, Senior Medical Writer, or related leadership role.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or supervising medical writers.

  • Proven expertise across multiple therapeutic areas.

  • Experience contributing to publication planning, scientific content development, and client communication strategies.


Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MSN, MSc, or relevant biosciences degree) preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field will be considered with relevant professional experience.

  • Strong knowledge of scientific and regulatory requirements related to early-phase studies, study protocols, and clinical study reports.

  • Familiarity with GPP, ICMJE, and publication ethics standards.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong data interpretation ability, and exceptional organizational skills.

  • Proven leadership capabilities and ability to manage multiple complex projects.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
