About the Role

ICON plc, a global leader in healthcare intelligence and clinical research, is seeking a Clinical Pathologist – Lab Director to serve as the Medical Director of its High Complexity Clinical Laboratory in Farmingdale, New York. This senior leadership role is accountable for medical oversight, regulatory compliance, scientific excellence, and operational leadership across all laboratory functions.

The Lab Director will guide clinical decision-making, ensure high-quality diagnostic testing, maintain accreditation standards, and drive innovation across laboratory operations.


Key Responsibilities

Medical Oversight & Leadership

  • Provide expert clinical guidance for all high-complexity diagnostic testing and laboratory activities.

  • Ensure accuracy, quality, and medical appropriateness of laboratory results and interpretations.

  • Offer consultation on test selection, diagnostic relevance, and clinical interpretation for internal teams and external healthcare partners.

  • Stay current with advancements in laboratory medicine, diagnostic technologies, and regulatory developments.

Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation

  • Maintain strict compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and federal/state regulatory requirements.

  • Lead laboratory preparation for regulatory inspections, accreditation audits, and quality reviews.

  • Establish and enforce laboratory policies, quality control plans, proficiency testing procedures, and documentation standards.

  • Personally perform non-delegable duties such as Annual Safety Inspection and Proficiency Review.

Staff Development & Training

  • Oversee recruitment, competency assessments, and performance management of laboratory personnel.

  • Provide scientific and medical mentorship to staff, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and continuous learning.

  • Ensure all team members are trained in updated SOPs, safety practices, and diagnostic methodologies.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead quality assurance programs, including global QC harmonization initiatives and KPI monitoring.

  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for non-conformances or safety incidents.

  • Drive risk management strategies focusing on patient safety, data integrity, and operational efficiency.

  • Ensure robust adverse event and incident response protocols.

Clinical Consultation & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide medical, scientific, and technical expertise to departments such as specialty labs, project management, and business development.

  • Interpret laboratory data and support clinical correlation and decision-making for internal stakeholders.

  • Contribute to educational, advisory, and organizational initiatives that enhance laboratory service offerings.

Operational Leadership

  • Contribute to laboratory strategy, growth planning, and operational excellence initiatives.

  • Support resource allocation, financial planning, and equipment procurement.

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies to strengthen diagnostic capabilities.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a high-complexity clinical laboratory environment.

  • At least 2 years in a leadership role such as Team Lead, Lab Manager, Associate Medical Director, or Medical Director.

  • Proven expertise in regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, ISO15189) and laboratory accreditation processes.

  • Demonstrated leadership in quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and patient safety programs.

  • Strong background in clinical consultation, diagnostic interpretation, and laboratory oversight.


Qualifications

  • MD or DO with a valid, unrestricted U.S. medical license strongly preferred.

  • Candidates with a PhD in a relevant clinical laboratory discipline will be considered.

  • Board certification in Clinical Pathology, or related subspecialty (Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology).

  • Ability to be onsite at the Farmingdale, NY laboratory three days per week.

  • Willingness to travel up to 15%.

Salary Information

Minimum salary range: $300,000 annually
